A legacy in the making

While Te Mata Estate’s winemaking history stretches back 130 years, the modern era of the business began in 1974 when the Buck and Morris families acquired the estate and set about building what would become an internationally acclaimed Hawke’s Bay winery.

Today, Te Mata Estate wines are enjoyed in 45 countries, with Australia its largest export market and momentum building in the United States. Closer to home, Te Mata has earned the kind of loyalty most businesses aspire to, with generations of New Zealanders returning to the brand for its quality, consistency, and reputation.

The perfect pairing

Global success takes more than a good vintage. It takes careful investment, strong relationships, and the confidence to keep thinking long term.

For Te Mata Estate, BNZ has supported that growth through acquisitions, capital investment, and working capital solutions designed to keep the business moving – through opportunities, market shifts, and the occasional difficult season.

From the Global Financial Crisis and COVID-19 disruption, through to Cyclone Gabrielle’s impact on the Hawke’s Bay region, BNZ has remained alongside the Te Mata team, helping provide certainty and support when it mattered most.

In good company

BNZ’s relationship with Te Mata Estate has never been just about facilities, funding, or finance. It’s been built through people who have stayed close to the business, understood its cycles, and backed its long-term view.

Stephanie Sidoruk, BNZ’s General Manager Working Capital & Transactional Banking, first worked with Te Mata Estate in 1999 as a Transactional Payments Specialist alongside John Buck, Nick’s father.

Today, Johan Otto, BNZ Commercial Partner, manages the relationship – a continuation of the kind of long-term connection that has shaped the partnership for decades.

Improving with age

Like many leading New Zealand businesses, Te Mata Estate is focused on how it can keep evolving for future generations.

Sustainability is now a major focus across its operations, from water efficiency and energy management to vineyard innovation. Through continuous improvement and a willingness to trial new approaches, the business has increased production yield per hectare by approximately 30 percent while continuing to protect quality.

It’s an approach that reflects the mindset behind the business: respect the craft, back good ideas, and never stand still.

Te Mata Estate has long been recognised as a pioneer within New Zealand wine, from its early vineyard development through to modern-day innovation in viticulture and winemaking. Today, that same spirit is driving investment in initiatives that support productivity, resilience, and better environmental outcomes.

As Te Mata Estate celebrates 130 years of winemaking, its focus remains firmly on what comes next – with continued investment, new market opportunities, and a commitment to quality shaping the next chapter.
