Interchange reimbursement fees

An interchange reimbursement fee is a fee paid by an acquirer (a financial institution that processes card transactions on behalf of a merchant) to an issuer (a financial institution that issues cards to cardholders).

Fees are subject to change without notice by the Schemes. Refer to visa.co.nz or mastercard.co.nz for more information about interchange fees. 

Interchange reimbursement fee schemes

Visa credit cards

All fees shown are a percentage of the transaction amount unless a dollar amount is specified. Some categories have different fee rates for Merchant Verification Value (MVV), Card Present (CP), and Card Not Present (CNP). 
*Contactless fee programme applies to any transaction amount.

Visa debit cards

All fees shown are a percentage of the transaction amount unless a dollar amount is specified. Some categories have different fee rates for Merchant Verification Value (MVV), Card Present (CP), and Card Not Present (CNP). 
Excludes EFTPOS transactions (defined as face-to-face card present transactions utilising account selection i.e. Chq / Sav).

Visa prepaid cards

All fees shown are a percentage of the transaction amount unless a dollar amount is specified. Some categories have different fee rates for Merchant Verification Value (MVV), Card Present (CP), and Card Not Present (CNP). 

Mastercard credit cards

All fees shown are a percentage of the transaction amount unless a dollar amount is specified. Some categories have different fee rates for Card Present and Card Not Present.

Mastercard debit cards

All fees shown are a percentage of the transaction amount unless a dollar amount is specified. Some categories have different fee rates for Card Present and Card Not Present.
Excludes EFTPOS transactions (defined as face-to-face card present transactions utilising account selection and PIN) switched domestically to issuer.

Mastercard prepaid cards

All fees shown are a percentage of the transaction amount unless a dollar amount is specified. Some categories have different fee rates for Card Present and Card Not Present.

Visa and Mastercard international issued cards

An international (inbound cross-border) transaction is a retail payment:

  • that uses a card issued by an issuer based outside of New Zealand
  • made at a business located in New Zealand.

The fees for an international (inbound cross-border) transaction are a percentage of the transaction amount. Unless a dollar amount is specified. Some categories have different fee rates for Card Present and Card Not Present.

Visa account funding transaction (AFT) interchange reimbursement fees

An AFT is a VisaNet transaction that pulls funds from a Visa card account for the purpose of funding a different, non-merchant account, such as prepaid card accounts, financial accounts, P2P accounts, or digital wallets. See more information on visa.co.nz.

BNZ domestic card issuing interchange reimbursement fees

BNZ, as an issuer of Visa branded payment cards, has set the following interchange reimbursement fees that will apply to purchases made by holders of a BNZ New Zealand issued Visa card.
