Brett and Angel met and married in an unconventional way compared to most couples – you may have seen them on reality TV show Married at First Sight. Once they settled into normal life together off-camera, they started to work towards purchasing their first home.
Going into the process, Brett and Angel both admitted they didn’t know much. They had a vague idea about deposits, interest rates, and repayments, but still weren’t sure if they had enough to start enquiring seriously.
After realising they’d rather pay off their own mortgage than someone else’s by renting, they decided to take the first step by speaking to a mortgage manager. Angel was also proactive and boosted their savings by increasing her contributions to her KiwiSaver account.
Even with Angel’s KiwiSaver account combined with their savings, they weren’t quite sure if they had enough of a deposit to meet the 20% threshold. However, after talking with BNZ, they realised they were much closer than they thought. “It’s surprising how much you don’t need,” Angel explains. They are now in their first home, which they were able to secure with less than a 20% deposit.
