We’re cheque-free

We’ve phased out cheques because many New Zealanders now make and receive payments electronically. If you’ve mainly used cheques in the past to pay people or bills, we’ll help you find other secure and convenient ways to make payments.

What going cheque-free means

We no longer:

  • issue or supply bank cheques, cheque books, or international cheques
  • accept cheques including foreign cheques
  • accept NZD drafts drawn on BNZ or foreign currency travellers cheques.

We will continue to honour BNZ issued Bank cheques and BNZ NZD travellers cheques, subject to clearance, and terms and conditions.
